Choosing a
Recycler
To avoid penalties for
improper disposal, caution should be taken that computer recycling is
done through a legitimate identified electronics recycler.
Traditionally, remarketers,
liquidators or clean out services focus only on good products, with
little or no attention paid to the environmental disposal of electronic
waste.
On the other hand, recyclers,
through fee-based services, provide a vast array of comprehensive
programs. These include providing compliance forms and recycling
certificates to meet government environmental guidelines. Much of the
equipment is de-manufactured with the metals, glass and plastics sorted,
separated, and categorized. Circuit boards are smelted. Irony, aluminum,
cabling and wiring are also processed for niche markets. Some provide
offsets against disposal costs for non-obsolete equipment in good
working condition. Employee purchase programs and charitable donations
may also be facilitated. Total end of life cycle management projects,
including packaging, logistics and transportation are managed
professionally. The credentials of the recycler should be verified, and
if necessary, a site visit should be arranged to inspect their
facilities.
